work. Download as you read!

Lloyd Beet and I met as I was looking for a place to stay just north of Belize City. I asked his son about the probability of me being able to camp in their
back lawn and when his dad came out to see what all this talk was about I met Lloyd Beet. Right away his friendliness was easily apparent and
we had a good conversation about helping out one's neighbors next door and in a distant country.
Here are my recollections of highlights of our conversations and information about Lloyd's work as a sculptor and column maker.
Lloyd lives with his four children Lloyd Jr., Steven, David, and little Tamara. They were visiting their mom in San Ignacio this weekend and so I only got to visit with them for one short evening.
Lloyd and I spoke about many things among them his philosophy for doing good for people. He told me that whenever he gets the chance he helps stranded motorists, and offers help to those who come by the house asking for various favors. At times his kids tell him that he is
being too nice but Lloyd sees it differently. He knows that we all need help at times.
"I give to somebody today and tomorrow I may need help myself, whether it is a health problem or something else. No one can do it alone."
I saw this philosophy in action as the family welcomed me in to wash up and then eat cookies with them and watch TV.
As I was walking around the house the next day I noticed some strange forms for some kind of concrete pouring. Lloyd show me the final products and as he explained the process I was intrigued. He designs columns of various shapes and sizes (which now, having traveled through Belize for a few weeks, I have seen all over, even down to PG), and also has designed swans, and flamingos. I realized this was not just a pour-and-wait job for Lloyd. He has invested himself in each design and has just finished a line of
Mayan calendar squares with each one representing a Mayan month. He has found these especially popular and has just recently sold a number of orders internationally.
These squares can be used as stepping stones to give your garden an ancient Mayan touch or worked into other creative constructions.

Lloyd first mixes the cement, then oils the forms, pours the cement into the forms, and later removes the forms to reveal the new sculpture or column. I am sure there are a number of details I left out but that is the basic jist of it.
Here are a few other pictures of his work.
