"On the Trail"

The Journals from the Road

November 15:  My little buddies show me around!  La Fonda, BC

Today I woke up in the hotel that I stayed at. (This is a good thing)

I headed out to find my fortune.  I had spoken to Mario at the taco stand a
day earlier and he told me that I might be able to visit his daughter's
school.  After getting directions from a Nun, and speaking to the director
of the pre-school the gate was unlocked for the PeaceBike visit.  All of
these 4 and 5 year old gathered in one room.  There were probably 90
altogether.  They got the first round of my elephant story and they actually

laughed at some of the right parts.  They could have been laughing and the
way I was saying those parts.  After that I showed them a few items of my
cargo such as my cook set, my TM-20 and my battery charger.  I got many great

questions and I could understand most of them.  Thank-you to all all of you
for the good morning song.  That was very beautiful.  A special thank-you to

the teachers who were willing to let this unusual visitor into their school.

I pedaled down the road and found a couple of fortunate paradoxes.  There is

very little shoulder on the roads but all of the drivers, even the trucks
swerve way out of their lane to avoid me.

There is almost always an abrupt edge that drops into a ditch but that means

that all the litter is not on the road where I could run over it (broken
bottles, etc.) but resting in the ditch.

I haven't quite figured out or mustered up the guts to ask a family for a
place in or near their house.

Today I stopped at a campground, which was more of a parking lot and decided

that it would be my new home.  As soon as I paid two young boys (on bike)
gave me a tour.  Vicente (age 5) and Roberto (age 3) then  decided that they
would put up my tent.  They did a better job than I did the first time.  I
just stood back and documented the whole experience.

That night I visited the host family and shared some hot water with corn
powder and sugar with them.  We talked about my trip and their jobs at the
campground.  The boys decided that they wanted to introduce themselves to
the PeaceBike world so a video of them will soon be included.

Paz,
