"On the Trail"

The Journals from the Road

November 23:  The Force was with Us - Rosarito, BC Mex

Yes, today we were Jedi knights on bikes.  All of the whippings the wind gave us yesterday were quickly forgotten as the road turned southwest.  Now we were speeding along with the wind at out backs and what a reward it was.  We also had smooth road conditions and we sailed, literally.

In fact, we went 30 miles in an hour and forty five minutes. Lovin' it baby!!

At about mid-day we met up with Enzo who we had met at the restaurant last night.  He is an Italian-Canadian born in Spain and traveling through Mexico on a motorcycle.  He speaks Italian, French, Spanish, and English.  Needless to say, he is quite an international guy.  He and I had a long discussion about medicinal plants and herbal remedies last night.  He told me that many plants have their own defenses for bacteria and that often when we eat these plants those same biological defenses in the plant will fight what is attacking our immune system.

We spoke to the man of the restaurant, Eugene, and he told us about a plant that kills amoebic dysentery.  He has used it before and it leaves you symptom-free in a matter of hours.  Too bad that we didn't know this a bit earlier or we could have given some to our Swiss friend Martin, who had a bad case of dysentery.

As it turns out we went out into the desert, Eugene and I, and found some of this plant. He told me how to prepare a tea with it and how much to take.  It is called Mal de Ojos "Bad for the Eyes" because the pollen from the plant is painful if it gets in one's eyes.  So I cut off the roots of this plant and will wash it with soap and water and save it for a tea if I need it.  Hopefully I won't.  All you conventional medicine subscribers don't need to worry.  I have all of the conventional medicine for amoebic as well.

Justin and I found a place to camp behind a restaurant in Rosarito.  Justin actually didn't feel very well today.  He thinks he had one too many quesadillas for breakfast and that he needs a little break from the constant bean intake.  He said what he really wanted for dinner was some rice pudding so we made some with raisins on my camp stove.  We got another chance to set up the tent in gale force winds but by the time we had gotten into our bags the wind had died down. Tomorrow it's on to Guerrero Negro for those classrooms plotting the journey on a map which want a jump start.
