"On the Trail"

The Journals from the Road

November 27: Heading South - North of San Ignacio 12 miles, Baja Sur, Mex.

I got up early today and had a few bowls of the Spanish equivalent of  'Froksted Flakes' which is 'Azucaritas' in Spanish, literally 'little sugar ones'.  After that filling breakfast I was humming a happy tune.

I said goodbye to Alfonso and his 25 year old son Roberto and headed for San Ignacio. Thanks to both of you for this mini-Thanksgiving vacation!  It is about 88 miles between the two cities and at fist I thought I might make it with such an early start. However, after a stop at the market for some food and a chat with a young, traveling family I didn't leave until after nine.

I had a sack lunch in a small town and struck up a conversation with a woman who owns a little taco stand.  She told me that her sisters work in a local tomato cannery for 16 hours a day and at the end of the week get paid $57.

After lunch the road was still level and so I made good time and finally got to a small rancho with a restaurant.  I requested Huevos a la Mexicana and one place to camp.

As my huevos were being scrambled I played name that tune on my harmonica with two year old Enrique.  Since I only knew one Mexican song, La Cucaracha, it was a win-win situation.  Enrique was actually more interested in my blues scales and later he attempted to run me over in his pedal-powered car just to show his appreciation.  We played a few two year old games and later he told me that tomorrow was a very special day.  It was his third birthday.

That night I camped next to the restaurant and the family moved into their little home.  I was started out of my slumber by a neighbor I didn't know I would have who also apparently lived there.  He zoomed his car in about 4 feet from my tent and let's just saw them are the things that dreams (nightmares) are made of.  But I woke up in one piece and all was well.

Hasta luego,

TAD
