December 5: When in doubt ask the boys who sell Santa hats - La Paz, BCS
I woke up this morning glad to be alive! I was so happy I even videotaped
the occasion and did a quick documentary of Hotel 45-237 of the night before.
I made up another batch of bloat meal, added my sports drink as a sweetener, and
gagged it down.
Of course, after I packed up my gear and rode down the road for 200 meters
through a rock corridor I spotted the restaurant I was looking for the night
before. It was just 200 meters beyond where I had camped. But
camping at that restaurant would not have been as good a story, I reasoned, and
so I went on, proud of my rustic lodgings of twilight past.
By about two in the afternoon I had reached La Paz. When I finally got
into the center of this large city I stopped next to two boys selling Santa
Clause hats. As I was pulling out my guidebook to ask them where I could
find an internet cafe a young cyclist came riding up and asked me if I spoke
Spanish and if I needed help. I told him what I was doing and he told me
that he has wanted to bike from Canada to La Pazto a long time. He was
training for a triathlon and was in the middle of a bike workout but decided to
cut it short and led me to his home instead.
His name is Leon and he lives with his mom Mirta, and sister Beatriz. He
is currently attending a local university and is in a computer science,
electrical engineering, and telecommunications program. He invited
me to stay and I happily accepted.
That night I got to hang out with his family and see La Paz at night.
