The Journals from the Road

March 20-21:   Reached the Great Tuxla! - Tuxla Gutierrez, Chiapas

Hey there,

Sorry about the double Mar 18 journals. I guess I was stuck in a Groundhog´s Day rerun.

Yesterday, Mar 20, I rode to Berriozabal! I was pushing daylight so I stopped at the second hotel I found and didn't shop around much. Not quite the deal of yesterday but I have been taking the toilet paper from each hotel room I stay at and I am now well stocked. It is good stuff for cleaning a bike chain and stuffing in bags when it is hot and humid outside, to absorb moisture.

The crowd around the centro at Berriozabal was quite lively. A bunch of guys were playing basketball so I went back to the hotel, put on my shoes, and hooped it up for a while. It had been a while but it was a lot of fun!

For dinner I found some mole enchiladas that were mole-velous. I also bought fruit for breakfast.

For after dinner entertainment I played the harmonica and worked on my Spanish vocab!

March 21

Today was a short ride of 20 km along a very wide, and well paved road. Tuxla is a big place (500,000 pop.) and PeaceBiker went into urban riding mode! I could pretty much stay up with the traffic thanks to the topes (speed bumps) which are the great equalizers around here.

I found a perfect hotel in town for 60 pesos and it even had hot water and a helicopter powered fan! I decided to wash all my clothes (well almost all) and hang them up in my room under the jet engine turbine!

Since you haven´t had many recent pictures I thought I would send you one from the cybercafe and a folk dance I saw this afternoon! Me and my summer cut! I love this town already. I found a wholewheat bread bakery, and vegi restaurant. Tomorrow, I look for a school and go to the zoo, supposedly Mexico´s biggest!

For those of you who haven´t checked the website in a while, you might like to review some of these journals online. Our linkerton pinkerton, J. Shawshank Redemption (not his real name, I don´t think.), has been adding fun links to the journals. Learn about topics from the journals, like why fresh OJ is best! See exactly where I am when I am writing with links to Mapquest maps! See the ruins of Mitla for yourself!

Wow, interactive fun is just a few clicks away!
