The Journals from the Road
March 24: 6000 Kilometer day! - San Cristobal, Chiapas It was time to celebrate. I checked my odometer for some other reason and saw that the long awaited moment had come. It clicked from 5999 to 6000. I pulled off the road and set up my camera. I got it to hang from a road sign for the 6K Celebration Photo. I didnīt celebrate too long because I had many more kms to go before I slept. I was tempted a few times to hitch a ride in an empty pickup but I kept on pedaling. For lunch I stopped at a tiny little village. The people there were indigineous and amongst each other spoke a language other than Spanish. I think the name for white guy is HO because all the kids were saying that and pointing at me. We worked out a vegi lunch which was actually a fruti lunch. It consisted of a large plate of bananas, mangos, and zapotes. This last fruit, the Zapote Colorado, was new to me. When cut open it looks like raw flesh. (I HAVE INCLUDED A PHOTO) It has the consistency of an avacado and tastes (at least to my subjective taste buds) like slightly burned vanilla custard. With that recommendation it is no wonder we all arenīt having Zapote-Icecream-Splits right now, right! I was about to call it a day after some 40 kms of climbing (with a 1600 m elevation gain) and stopped at a little roadside town. One of the town authorities tried to convince me that I was almost there and that San Cristobal was right over the next hill. I have learned to be warey of such phrases but took his word for it. Sure enough after 45 more minutes of climb I was carreening downhill and actually feeling a cold breeze, yes! Within 10 minutes I was in El Centro Historico de San Cri-STO-bal de las Casas. It was almost dark so I took the first well priced hotel and got myself a room. I met two German couples in the hotel and another German fellow outside and they all welcomed me to stay at their homes in Germany! Their enthusiasm was just what I needed as I was very tired at the moment. I got an email from Jon and he is also in San Cristobal. I will go search for him tomorrow!
