April 29:   The International Day of the Traveler: Campeche, Campeche

Today is the official Day of the Traveler, I heard.

This traveler woke up after quite a night, much of which did not include sleep. I am not sure if I was being tormented by psychological ticks or the real thing but it seemed that even with my fan on full blast and my body covered with the odor of insect repellent I was being bitten by something. I stayed awake until about 4:30 tossing, turning, and slapping at these invisible jaws of irritation. Finally, I had to take measures into my own hands so I (remember this is 4:30 in the morning) flicked on the light, opened up my tent bag, and put up my tent right in the middle of the room. Then I took a shower to wash off these invisible beings, and dove into my tent like I was on some under-cover mission. Minutes after I had inflated my air mattress and snuggled up in my liner I was sound asleep until morning. I guess I have gotten pretty comfortable with sleeping in a tent when I prefer it to a bed. But, then again, this bed may have had more fauna than the usual.

Well, at 10:00 am I had an interview with a local weekly newspaper called Semanario. I got it through getting to know the boss of a cybercafe who also ran a paper!

It was a great chance to share the mission of PeaceBike. This staff is very online savvy and may be able to send me a copy of the article to put up on our Spanish Website! We got some photos in the central park and I invited the people of Campeche to join in this journey of peace both online and through our pen pal opportunities. A big thanks to Carlos Luis for making time for this interview and to Guadalupe for the great breakfast (!Hicama!).

Now I am catching up on journals and photo uploads for the site. I plan to head north to Merida, Yucatan tomorrow and then to Chichen Itza and then south toward Belize!

Peace(Bike),
