Saturday, November 18, 2000: Better Wind Day - Chiclayo to Chepen, Peru - 75 km

Francisco (aka Panchito) here...

Leaving Chiclayo was much easier than our entrance of last night. Within five minutes we were back on the Panamericana Highway. Again the wind was a challenge, however for a portion we had a five percent tail wind (that means mostly cross wind but some to our backs). That was enough to put wind back on our sails. Yahoo for a significant portion of the ride we were able to enjoy cycling for what cycle enjoyment is all about - to glide along with little effort.

As I waited for Tad in Mocupe I was serenaded by one of the band members who was waiting for the bus to the next town to play his music. It was the best quena sound that I ever heard. What neat things happen when just hanging around. Then a very cordial man named Victor began chatting with me. His English was as good as my Castillano. Victor is the mayor of the town. Cool man! He bought me a Coke.

Tad and I bought a bunch of fruit and veggies at an indoor market and ate it right there and shared some pineapple with our onlookers. After a lengthy break we hit the road again and made it to Chepen. As I negotiated 15 soles total (about $US4.50) for Tad and I for one night hostel, our new friend Herbert from Holland showed up. He was continuing on a bit further.

We had a quiet night with a light dinner and a stroll through the busy Saturday evening Plaza de Arma.
