"On the Trail"
Sunday, Dec 3, 2000: Picarones, fruit salads, and goodbyes. -- Lima, Peru
We plan to leave Lima tomorrow and so today is our day for goodbyes. After more than a week here we have both made many friends…Alberto and Nelly´s family, Janet´s family, and Julia and Cesar, the couple that run our favorite internet spot in town.
Julia and Cesar invited Frank and I for fruit salad (especially for the vegetarian, how caring). They both work in the cybercafe and are almost always there so we had our breakfast of fruity delights in the café as the clients were typing away. They and their two kids Cristina and Dani also joined us and we had a great talk. Cesar shared stories about his faith and his work in the church and his beliefs about listening and respecting young people. All six of us had a wonderful time, sitting on our plastic chairs, surrounded by internet stations, and slurping down fresh fruit! Thank-you so much to the Supo family for your dear friendship.
For those of you in Lima, please go and visit them. There service, although a beginning business, is probably the best and fastest in Lima. They use fiber optic lines instead of modems! If you do visit please tell them that PeaceBike sent you. They are 2 blocks in the direction of the center of Lima from the Shell Gasoline station on Al Cazar in Rimac, Lima, Peru. Or for those of you not visiting Peru in the near future you can now visit their new website at www.geocities.com/cdservinfo. Please send them a note if you visit their site.
After doing some packing in the afternoon and some more internet work Janet and I went to the city Center, enjoyed picarones (something like a doughnut), and then took a evening bus ride to the top of the Hill of San Cristobal. Although the view from the top was good in the day it was spectacular at night, like a massive Lima Christmas tree. When we got back Janet and I said good-bye. Over the last few days we have become good friends and it was tough leaving.
Making and leaving friends is hard, but well worth the energy,
TAD
