"On the Trail"

The Journals from the Road

Monday, January 1, 2001: Day to Rest - Copacabana, Bolivia

I was awakened by the partyers at 6:00am but then fell right back to sleep until 11:00am. Peter and I (who awoke earlier than the others) shared some conversation then he headed on a five hour hike. I had a breakfast which consisted of some of the food that I still had on my bike - bread, bananas, mango and orange, then I went for a walk around town.

I saw a dog snoring on the side of the city dirt roads. Many vehicles were decorated especially on their front ends - I think they were for the new year celebrations. As I headed down the hilly roads to the shore of Titicaca, I noticed a magnificent view of the lake and the surrounding mountains and of the small vessels in the water. There were many people on the beach. Some even played in the water. I touched the water. I felt special because I was able to touch the highest lake in the world and I have touched the biggest fresh water lake in the world as well - Lake Superior.

I had a great fried trucha (trout) lunch on the beach with Jeremie, Tony and Svein then did a bit of internet work. At the internet site I met a very nice couple from Virginia, USA - Barb and Bill. They gave me a box of colored pencils and some pencils to give to the next school that we visit. That was so nice of them. Later I met the gang with Phillipe and Megan at a pizza restaurant. I played a couple of tunes on the harmonica for them as we waited for the good meal. I was beginning to feel rough by the end of the night which actually ended early - about 9:30.

Hopefully Tad will be meeting me soon.
