"On the Trail"
Friday, July 13, 2001: Praia a Mare to Oliveto campeggio in Sapri, Italy - 46 km
Frank here…
Needless to say, I got up relatively late because of my late night. The temperature again was very high so I went for a swim to cool down. I almost burned my feet on the sand so I ran to the water to keep from toasting my toes! It was fun at that beach because that many of the people whom I saw knew me from the night before. I felt like part of a family.
The riding was hot and tough, partly because I started in the highest heat of the day at about 2:30. Will I ever learn? It was well worth it however because I enjoyed the Oliventu camgeggio in Sapri where I met Alberto and a couple of young travellers (Birgit and Nina) from Austria. It was however the most expensive campsite that I stayed at so far – 29,000 lire.
Alberto offered me some pasta. I really wanted some but was more driven to take my swim. I first bought many liquids which is really needed in this country to combat dehydration, and a pannini with mortadella meat. Then I walked across the road to the beach and had a lovely cooling down as the sun was falling.
Alberto and I chatted about many, many things. He told me that there are places where you can take your own personally picked olives and get them pressed. That is so cool! He also told me that he loved very very spicy food. Well at that point we both realized that I would not have been able to eat the pasta that he offered me because he made it terribly hot, even too hot for himself. I am very sensitive to hot spicy food, so I was glad that I did not miss anything.
We joined the young Austrian travellers, shared some cookies and nuts and chatted until the music ended.
