"On the Trail"
Sunday, July 22, 2001: To the Beach - Pisa, Italy Frank here… Today we had a bite to eat at a gastronomia (I think that is what it was called) - where you take out or eat in. These places are very busy and the food is good. Fortunately, I did not stuff myself because we headed to the beach in the clear, bright sunshine. I remember Gabrielle being very angry because we had to park his car five kilometres from the beach and go on a bus. He kept saying that it was the mafia. The beach was crowded and full of very scantily clad people. The waves were sometimes big enough to body surf - Yahoo! Beaches in Italy are a way of life to those who live near (which would be the majority of the population). They do not appear to be concerned about skin cancer like we are in North America. I had a chat with our neighbouring sunbather, Marcella, a beautician from a nearby town. I was quite surprised that she knew very little English at all. We headed back into town and had take-out pizza. I had to have the one with anchovies. Yummy! We talked a lot again, but this time slept relatively early - about 1:30am. -I think that a person who smiles a lot tends to be a person whom I would like to be near. -Frank Pollari.
