"On the Trail"

The Journals from the Road

Sunday, August 12, 2001: Bent Wheel - Charlottetown to Wood Islands, PEI, 106km (the long way) then to Pictou, Nova Scotia via ferry

Frank here…

Louise rode a few kilometers with me first thing in the morning on the fairly quiet road heading north of Charlottetown. From there we visited the birth of Canada in the Province House. While I was cycling later in the day Louise hung around the Province House and witnessed some people who were dressed in the period and acting out the parts.

We were on our way to a Highland Games competition. I was on bike and Louise by car with her bike on the hitch at the back of the car. I watched Louise and yelled at her to stop but it was too late. She backed into another parked car. She was only moving about 4 or 5 kilometres per hour, but it was enough to scratch up the vehicle and to bend her back bicycle wheel. Bummer. Fortunately, no one got hurt.

We were both a bit down from the unfortunate incident so we decided to not go to the games. Fortunately our spirits were lifted a bit when we met a great couple from Charlottetown who were riding their bikes along their own province of PEI. It would have been nice to meet them earlier because they would have let us stay at their home while we were in Charlottetown. Maybe next time. I continued on my cycling and I met Louise at the Wood Islands ferry dock. I finished a total of 200 kilometers in PEI. I have a goal to ride at least 200 km in each state and province of the USA and Canada. I ticked off another province. Yahoo. I only have about 35 to go. I have a lifetime ahead of me to get it done.

The ferry ride to Nova Scotia was rather uneventful. We entered Pictou at the end of the Hector Festival which celebrated the Hector which was the first ship from Scotland which brought Scots to settle in this area.

We found a quaint little hotel with a floor that was on an angle and fell fast asleep after having a ham dinner.
