Monday, August 13, 2001: Skipping Stones - Pictou to Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada

Frank here…

We took the bridge to Port Hawksbury - the first city on the famous Cape Breton Island - which is very green and has its share of hills. Cape Breton Highlands National Park had some spectacular views, but the weather being quite overcast, drizzly, and chilly kept some of the vistas obscured. Fortunately, when we got to the west side the air cleared a bit and we got to see Cap Rouge.

What I especially liked about that spot were the perfect round, smooth, and flat skipping stones. I was in heaven! Everywhere I looked were these water skippers. And, the sea water was calm, so I just set them in motion as Louise hunted for a couple of big, pinkish, round (not flat) heavy rocks for her backyard. I think this spot beats my other favorite skipping stone spots on the shores of Lake Superior which is much closer to home. I even decided to take one of the skippers home.

Earlier that day we visited the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site in the town of Baddeck. I did not know that he did so much work with the deaf. He was quite an inventive and brilliant man. People are still working on some of his ideas now that we have much more sophisticated technology. The museum is very user friendly, interesting, and has a lot geared to inspiring children. It was a joy to visit.

We camped at Le Plage, which was a little further south down the coast of Cape Breton Island, after filling up on a great pizza and pasta for dinner. Believe it or not, I did not get my fill of Italian food even though I recently arrived from Italy.
