"On the Trail"

The Journals from the Road

Monday - Wednesday, August 20-22, 2001: Fish and Friends - Hull, Que to Maxwell, Ontario - 37 km

Frank here...

Before saying goodbye to Chris and his awesome hospitality, I rode another 37 km to total 200 kilometres in Quebec. Yahoo! Another province/state that I can check off my list!

Louise drove through the congested Toronto and we made a few wrong turns but made it to Denis and Barb's by early evening. It was so good to see them (and Barb's kids Al and Andrea) again and we (as usual) stayed up late chatting until I could no longer keep my eyes opened.

On Tuesday Denis cooked us a great breakfast then we headed for Thornbury for a day of sailing. Louise and I, being more land lubbers than sea goers, sometimes fought short bouts of sea sickness during our journey along the southern shorelines of Georgian Bay near the Georgian Peaks. We worked as deck hands especially because Barb was nursing a broken hand which she injured while fixing an axle on a tractor on her farm. It was so nice to have the refreshing breeze of the lake on our faces and bodies.

In Thornbury we docked, ate dinner then slept in the boat. What a great day with great friends!

On Wednesday Denis and I went fishing and had a nice chat while Barb and Louise did some errands in town. He was determined to not stop until we nabbed a fish. With a lot of Denis's help, I landed a nice ten pound lake trout which we caught as we trolled with a his downrigger. He kept on congratulating me, but I only did about ten percent of the work. Denis hooked it, reeled it in most of the way, and netted it. I only reeled it in the very last section, where I would get all the glory.

On the way back to their home in Maxwell, we stopped off at Andrea's place of work where she takes care of horses. Andrea has grown up so much since I saw her last - only 14 months earlier.

Many old friends came to Denis and Barbs for dinner (a big portion of it was the fresh lake trout from our morning catch) and to visit with us. His son Chris has also sprouted since I've seen him last year. Louise's friends Sherry and Andy with their teenage kids Carmen and Lee came as well. I jammed some guitar with Lee and Al. As usual, we stayed up late and chatted while I fell asleep while laying on the floor with the their dogs.
