Why is PeaceBike happening?

Tad says, "We have already visited thousands of students in many countries. At each school visit, we ask: 'If we all had friends in other countries, would it be harder to go to war with those countries?' Kids know the answer. Some want to be pen pals and email pals. Thousands are pledging to be peacemakers in their families and communities. Now I'll ask you what I ask students after each visit: 'What can you do today to be a peacemaker?'"

friends in mexicoPeaceBike believes that kids like to learn about each other. We also believe when kids understand each other, it's easier to be friends. Friends will try to solve problems without war, even when they get older. So Tad and Frank are riding their bikes around the world to help friendship and peace happen. They are helping kids become pen pals and email pals.

Tad and Frank are having fun too. They love to ride bikes and see new places. They love to meet people and listen to stories. They love to tell stories and play music. They think you'll have fun going on the journey with them. You can see pictures and video clips of the trip. You can read about what they do in journals. You can write to them and to other kids around the world.

How did the idea of PeaceBike get started?

When Tad was in 8th grade, he went to school in India. One of his teachers rode a bike around the world with his wife and two sons. That teacher told Tad many stories of his trip. Tad decided that one day he would go on a bike trip around the world.

When Tad was in school he also tried to be a peacemaker. He did skits about getting along with other people. He worked with his school so they would stop using throw-away trays in the cafeteria. He learned how to lead his family "pow-wow" so they could figure out what to do about troubles.

Tad went to college and learned how to be a teacher. He taught grade school for two years. When Tad thought about peace, and biking, and kids, and the world, he knew he couldn't do it by himself. He started talking to other people about the idea of PeaceBike.

They wanted thousands, millions of people to go on a journey of peace. Not everyone would have to ride a bike. There would be lots of ways to help. That's when PeaceBike started to happen.

What about Tad?

Tad is a school teacher who decided his classroom could be the world. He is also a student, because he wants to learn in that classroom too!

Tad learned to ride a bike with training wheels when he was five or six. Now he is 26 years old and still likes to bike (could you guess?). He got a new bike for this PeaceBike trip. He calls it PeaceForce One.

Tad also likes to play basketball with his cousins, brothers, and sister at his grandparents' house and in his dad's shop. He has been in many plays, and likes to dance and sing. He was part of a singing group in college and he sang with a barbershop quartet. Tad plays piano, but decided a harmonica would be easier to carry on his bike. He loves reading books.

Tad has great ideas for having fun. He makes up new games. One Christmas, he gave his little brother a Bing-Bang game, that he created. Tad treats people with respect, so it's fun to be with him.

Tad lives in Oregon, USA, when he is not on PeaceBike.

What about Frank?

Frank knows computers! He helps other people figure out what goes wrong with them. He has a good sense of humor and listens to others so that a frustrating computer problem can often turn into fun!

Frank loves being outside. He learned to down hill ski when he was five years old, and still skis and races. He has run marathons. He has also been on some very long bicycle rides. He rode around Lake Superior. He rode down the West Coast USA from Canada to Mexico. But PeaceBike is his longest trip.

Frank is a music man. He plays many instruments. He likes to join other people and just start playing their music with them.

When Frank has a decision to make, he says: "If I think I will say later 'I SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT!' then I'll do it!" That's part of how he came to join PeaceBike.

Frank is kind, funny, and courageous. Frank has not let an eye disease, Retinitis Pigmentosa, stop him. Sometimes you will read in his journals that he is worried about it getting dark. It is very hard for him to see in darkness, so he has to plan ahead and work things out.

Frank did school visits about PeaceBike in Thunder Bay, Canada, where he lives. Now he is back on the road with PeaceBike.

Who else is part of PeaceBike?

PeaceBike has a Board of Directors. They meet to talk about what PeaceBike is doing and what could make it even better in helping peace happen.

There is a "web master" who is in charge of the website, and people who work with him.

There are volunteers working with pen pals; helping others know about PeaceBike; and sending ideas to the web master. There are volunteers to do school programs on PeaceBike.

People are sending money to help pay expenses.

People are reading journals, and people are praying for the bikers.

shaunaThere are people besides Tad and Frank who will ride their bikes with PeaceBike. One of these is Shauna Curry who is from Seskatchewan, Canada. Shauna rode with PeaceBike in 2000 in Central America, and then continued riding on her own in Colombia. Shauna took PeaceBike letters to schools in Colombia while Tad and Frank biked on south. There are also people who ride for a few kilometers or for a day on a PeaceBike Ride-Along. The first Ride-Along was the day PeaceBike left Oregon. Many people rode the first mile of the journey with them. The second Ride-Along happened as they started Continent #2 in Quito, Ecuador.

People are writing to their new PeaceBike pen pals or to the PeaceBikers.

People decide they want to learn more about doing peace at home, school, and work.

All these people are a part of PeaceBike.

There is a place for you in PeaceBike too! How do you want to be involved?

Questions?

Do you have questions about PeaceBike? They might be the same questions kids in other countries asked Tad. Start with these first. There are also other questions and answers on the website. But if your question is not there, you can ask PeaceBike directly. (Give Tad and Frank some time to get to the Internet and get an answer back to you.)

And now...Journals for Kids!

Every day, the bikers write a journal. We are writing highlights of their journals here for you. Journal Highlights start in September 2000 when PeaceBike goes to South America. Later there will be Highlights of the first year of the trip too. Do you have any questions or suggestions for us? Did we spell a word wrong? Let us know!

Are you ready to start the journey?

Well then. Did Tad sleep in his tent in his first night in South America? Where was his bike? Read on... (And enjoy the trip!)
